JM Outdoor Living Landscape Design Aftercare Guide

Designed to Last. Maintained with Intention.

Your outdoor space was designed as a complete environment—where planting, drainage, layout, and structure work together as one system.

Thoughtful seasonal care helps preserve both the integrity of the design and how the space is experienced over time.

Landscape Seasonal Maintenance:

Spring (March – May)

Refresh mulch, lightly prune, fertilize, check irrigation, and redefine bed edges. Clean lines and healthy
soil bring the space back to life.

Summer (June – August)

Water deeply in the early morning, adjust irrigation, monitor plant stress, control weeds, and avoid
heavy pruning during extreme heat.

Fall (September – November)

Refresh mulch, remove debris, lightly prune, fertilize for root development, and observe drainage after
rainfall.

Winter (December – February)

Protect plants during freezes by covering sensitive plants with frost cloth or breathable fabric—avoid plastic directly on foliage. Water soil earlier in the day before a freeze to help retain ground warmth, and reduce irrigation during colder periods. Clean beds, remove debris, and monitor drainage and surfaces after storms.

Seasonal Pruning Note-

Mid-February (around Valentine’s Day) is typically ideal for pruning roses and cutting back perennials in Southeast Texas. Avoid heavy pruning during extreme heat or immediately before freeze events, as this can stress plants.

What to Watch

Standing water, erosion, shifting surfaces, drainage issues, or plant stress should be addressed early. Important

If you see an issue, please contact JM Outdoor Living before it turns from preventable to too late. Many landscape issues that require replacement could have been prevented with early attention and proper seasonal care.

Landscape Care Notes:

This guide is designed to help you care for your outdoor space. Every landscape is influenced by soil conditions, weather, and how the space is used—no two are exactly the same.

At JM Outdoor Living, each project is designed as a complete system—planting, drainage, grading, and layout working together. Proper seasonal care helps protect that system and preserve how it performs over time.

Irrigation Note-

Overwatering is one of the most common causes of plant decline. Water deeply and less frequently rather than shallow, frequent watering.

Adjust irrigation seasonally and monitor for signs of stress—yellowing, wilting, or consistently wet soil can indicate improper watering.

Mulch-

A  light layer of mulch (typically 1–2 inches). Mulch should help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature while still allowing water and air to reach the soil.
Excessive mulch can block water from reaching the soil, trap moisture at the surface, and limit oxygen to plant roots.

Freeze Preparation-

Water soil earlier in the day before a freeze to help retain ground warmth. Do not water at night or run irrigation overnight. Cover sensitive plants with frost cloth or other breathable fabric, and protect exposed irrigation components such as backflow preventers, valves, and above-ground piping during hard freezes.

Recommended Landscape Products-

For long-term plant health and soil performance, we recommend MicroLife® organic fertilizers.

These products support beneficial soil biology, improve nutrient availability, and help landscapes establish more successfully over time.

Care Guidelines & Expectations

This guide is provided to help you care for your outdoor space over time. Every landscape is influenced by soil conditions, weather patterns, plant health, and how the space is used.

Each landscape is unique, and plant performance will vary based on site conditions and ongoing care.

At JM Outdoor Living, every project is designed as a complete system—planting, drainage, grading, and layout working together. Proper seasonal care helps support that system, but ongoing maintenance and site conditions will ultimately influence long-term performance.

Plant material is living and may require seasonal adjustment or replacement as it establishes in a new environment.

When Something Doesn’t Feel Right

Many issues—drainage, plant decline, or layout challenges—are not maintenance problems, but design opportunities.
